Ajinomoto Shuts Chinese Lysine Plant Source: Feedinfo News Service (dated 12/09/2008) 12 Sept - Ajinomoto Co., Ltd. has announced the closure of its lysine factory located in Chengdu Sichuan, China. The plant has operated as a joint venture between the Ajinomoto group and China's Sichuan Chuanhua Chemical Group Corp. Lysine Hcl 98.5% feedgrade capacity was around 31 000 mt per annum at the plant, having expanded in 2004 from a nameplate capacity of 15 000 mt per annum.
Although it has not yet been officially confirmed that this will be a permanent shutdown, it is understand that high raw material costs combined with disappointing Lysine prices have prompted the decision to stop production.
This facility was Ajinomoto's only production base for L- Lysine feedgrade in China. The demand for Lysine in China is estimated at around 250 000 mt per annum (approximately 25% of global demand) with local producer Global Bio-Chem Technology now dominating the Chinese market.
In addition to this closure, it is also understood that another small Lysine facility (15 000 mt pa) located in China will also cease production during September 2008 due to poor profitability.
